Health Consultations
Scientific discernment, applied to your recovery.
Post-viral illness is disorienting. The science moves quickly, care is fragmented, and people with infection-associated illness average nearly twice as many medical visits a year as their peers — often cycling through referrals, duplicate tests, and unproven treatments.
Dr. Colgan works as your scientific partner, clarifying what the evidence does and doesn’t support so your time, energy, and money go where they’re most likely to help.
You’ll come away knowing:
What’s known, and what’s still being studied
What’s worth your time and money
How to find informed clinicians
How to work effectively with your care team
-
A comprehensive intake assessment that builds a complete picture of your situation:
Full illness timeline, from initial infection through the present
Medical history, current and past treatments, and how you responded to each
A map of your current medical care team and where the gaps are
Structured symptom and function assessment using validated tools, so that change over time can be tracked objectively rather than by memory
Screening for commonly missed overlapping conditions- post-exertional malaise, autonomic dysfunction, mast cell activation syndrome, so that the right evaluations can be requested from the right specialists
Clarification of your priorities: what you most want back, and what a sustainable life looks like for you right now
Report summarizing findings, with individualized recommendations, prioritized next steps, and curated resources.
-
Research translation. Plain-language explanation of the current evidence on treatments and interventions: What has real support, what remains unproven, and what carries risk. You will leave knowing how to evaluate a new claim yourself.
Spending where it counts. Post-viral illness is expensive in ways that are rarely discussed openly. People with Long COVID average nearly twice as many medical visits per year as their peers, and out-of-pocket spending in closely related conditions such as ME/CFS can approach 15% of household take-home income, much of it on repeated referrals, duplicated testing, supplements, and unproven protocols marketed to desperate families. Consultations include candid discussion of which evaluations are likely to change your care and which are not, how to think about the cost and evidence behind treatments you are considering, and how to recognize claims that are not supported by data before you pay for them.
Personalized science- your own data: Wearable data turns invisible symptoms into numbers your care team can see
Device selection: which wearable actually measures what matters for your situation, and which metrics to ignore
Your personal baseline: resting and nighttime heart rate, heart rate variability, step count and upright time, and sleep, tracked over weeks, not guessed from memory
Individualized pacing thresholds: heart rate and activity ceilings set to your own physiology, with overnight heart rate variability used as an early warning of overexertion before a crash arrives
Crash forensics: linking symptom flares back to the specific activity, exposure, or sleep pattern that preceded them
Objective evidence for appointments and claims: charts that document impairment and treatment response, useful where subjective reports alone have not been believed
Pacing and energy management. Education on post-exertional symptom exacerbation and why conventional "push through it" advice can cause harm. Practical work on activity pacing, energy budgeting, trigger identification, and crash-recovery planning.
Communication and advocacy strategy. Preparation for medical appointments: focused agendas, prioritized question lists, and concise written summaries your clinicians can actually use. Guidance on documentation, and diagnostic coding.
Work, school, and daily life navigation. Phased return-to-work planning, workplace adjustments, school accommodations for children and adolescents, and realistic household planning.
Care team coordination support. Help identifying the clinicians you still need.
Family and caregiver education. Sessions that include partners, parents, and caregivers, because recovery happens at the household level.
Resource and community connection. Signposting to peer support, credible information sources, patient organizations, and open research studies and clinical trials.
-
Consultations are conducted remotely and are designed around the reality of limited energy: sessions can be shortened, split, or rescheduled without penalty. Written summaries follow every appointment, so nothing depends on your recall or cognitive stamina on the day. Pediatric families receive materials suited to the child's age alongside parent-facing guidance.
-
Your symptoms will be taken seriously. Nothing will be dismissed as stress, deconditioning, or imagination. Where the science is uncertain, that uncertainty will be named honestly rather than papered over with false confidence.
-
This is an educational and scientific consulting service. Dr. Colgan does not diagnose conditions, prescribe or adjust medications, order tests, or provide medical treatment, and these consultations do not replace care from a licensed clinician. All medical decisions rest with you and your treating providers.
Seek urgent medical attention, do not wait for a consultation, for chest pain, fainting, severe shortness of breath, new weakness or numbness, confusion, or any symptom that feels like an emergency.
Psychotherapy & Behavioral Health
ADULTS · OREGON & COLORADO · VIRTUAL
Compassionate partnership, grounded in science.
Remote psychotherapy and behavioral health care for people living with complex chronic illness.
Post-viral and autonomic conditions are physiological illnesses, and therapy doesn’t treat their cause. What it can offer is a place to be fully seen, where the effort it takes just to get through the day is acknowledged, and practical skills, like pacing and interoceptive awareness, that support sustainable functioning and recovery.
-
Post-viral and autonomic conditions are physiological illnesses. Therapy does not treat their cause. but it can sharpen the signal, helping you notice what your body is telling you so you can skillfully respond.
Strategic healing does not mean fighting your system. It means learning to decipher its language, pacing with the body's rhythms rather than against a hurried world, so that cellular repair and autonomic balancing have the room they need to unfold.
Illness reshapes the landscape. Identity, roles, relationships, and family life all shift within it. If and when it is useful to you, there is room here for those conversations, too.
The aim is simple: to help you trust the slow ecology of your own system, and from that trust, let recovery become possible
-
Therapy here is tailored, not templated. These are some of the tools available; which ones we reach for is up to you.
Narrative and meaning-making. Illness rewrites the plot without asking. Therapy makes room to author what comes next, on your own terms.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). An evidence-based approach to meeting yourself in the present moment, even the hardest ones, and moving toward what matters to you.
Mindfulness and meditation. Training attention so that awareness becomes steady enough to notice early signals, and spacious enough to hold difficult ones.
Interoception and body awareness. Learning to read your body's internal cue, the shift before the crash, so that pacing is guided by information rather than guesswork.
Pacing and behavioral strategy. Practical work on energy budgeting, activity thresholds, and recovery planning, with optional wearable data to make invisible patterns visible.
Relationship with self. Meeting a changed body without self-blame, and rebuilding a sense of who you are within it.
Grief, identity, and relationships. When wanted, space for the losses and role shifts that come with a life reshaped by illness, and for the family and partners living it alongside you.
Together, these support the conditions in which cellular repair and autonomic balance have room to unfold.
-
Chronic illness does not fall evenly. Access to diagnosis, believable care, accommodations, and rest is shaped by race, income, gender, disability, immigration status, language, and geography, and those who face the steepest barriers are often the least likely to be believed.
Metis welcomes clients of every race, ethnicity, faith, body size, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, and background.
We practice from the understanding that lived experience is a form of expertise, that no one should have to prove their suffering to receive care, and that belonging is not something to be earned.
Cognitive & Neuropsychological Assessment
CHILDREN, TEENS & ADULTS
Clear answers about how you think, learn, and function.
A neuropsychological evaluation maps cognitive strengths alongside areas of difficulty, then turns the findings into practical recommendations for daily life, school, and work.
Evaluations can help with:
Diagnostic clarity
School accommodations (504 plans and IEPs)
Tracking cognitive change after illness or injury
Presurgical planning
-
We provide comprehensive evaluations for children, adolescents, and adults with a range of neurocognitive differences:
ADHD
Autism spectrum disorder
Learning disabilities
Giftedness and twice-exceptional profiles
Concussion and traumatic brain injury
Memory concerns
Post-illness cognitive change
Cognitive effects of psychological trauma
Pre- and post-surgical evaluation
-
There are some assessment services we do not provide:
Custody evaluations or related assessments for family-court proceedings
Forensic evaluations, including competency to stand trial, criminal responsibility, or delinquency proceedings
Independent medical examinations (IMEs) or evaluations requested by an employer, insurer, or attorney for litigation purposes.
Fitness-for-duty evaluations.
Immigration, asylum, or hardship evaluations.
Emergency or crisis assessment, including evaluation of imminent risk of harm.
These evaluations require specialized forensic training and a different professional role than the clinical one offered here.
Ketogenic Metabolic Health
ADULTS · US & INTERNATIONAL · VIRTUAL · COMING SOON
Metabolic approaches to support cellular energy and brain health.
Guidance on ketogenic metabolic therapy as a complementary approach to chronic illness and overall health. Emerging research suggests that shifting the body’s fuel source from glucose to ketones may help calm neuroinflammation, support autonomic stability, and improve mitochondrial energy production, with potential benefits for mental clarity and stamina.
This work grew out of Dr. Colgan’s own experience with a ketogenic diet, which led her to conduct multiple clinical and observational studies on its effects.
Long COVID Peer Support Group
FREE · COMMUNITY
Open to all adults living with Long COVID (PASC).
Fatigue, brain fog, post-exertional crashes, and dizziness are hard to explain. This group is a place to be among people who already understand.
-
Each meeting begins with a short topic segment (about 10–15 minutes). Topics rotate and may include pacing and energy management, sleep, brain fog, managing flares, working with your medical team, returning to work or school, and coping with grief and uncertainty.
The rest of the session is open sharing time. Members are invited — never required — to talk about:
Wins — anything that went better than expected, no matter how small
Struggles — setbacks, flares, hard days, and frustrations
-
What is shared in the group stays in the group.
No advice is required. Listening is participation.
We share personal experience, not medical instructions. Decisions about treatment belong to you and your clinician.
We respect each other's limits: cameras off, lying down, leaving early, or joining by audio only are all welcome.
We do not judge anyone's symptoms, pace of recovery, or choices.
